Dachshund Collars: Protecting a Long Neck and Back
Why width, weight and where the lead attaches matter more on a long-bodied dog.
A dachshund's long spine and short legs mean the way a lead pulls matters more than it does for most dogs. Here is how we think about collars and harnesses for the breed.
Keep the collar light
A long neck doesn't need a heavy collar. Choose soft, burnished-edge leather in a narrow-to-medium width so it doesn't sit on the throat.
Use a harness for walks
Pulling against a collar loads the neck and, through it, the spine. A well-fitted harness spreads the load across the chest.
Check the fit often
Dachshunds with thick coats can hide a loose or tight fit. Recheck with two fingers every few weeks.
