Breakaway Collars: Why Cats Need Them

How a safety clasp works, and how to check that it still opens.

Cats climb, squeeze and jump. A collar that doesn't release can become a hazard. A breakaway clasp is designed to open under strain so your cat can get free.

How it works

The clasp holds under normal wear but separates when a firm pull is applied. It is a safety feature, not a lock.

Check it regularly

Open and close the clasp every month. Replace the collar if it no longer releases smoothly or the leather shows wear.

Fit

Two fingers should slide under the collar. Too loose and a paw can slip through; too tight and it's uncomfortable.

Cat-safe checklist

  • Breakaway clasp

Opens under strain, so it never catches on a branch or a radiator.

  • Featherlight

Soft leather that your cat barely notices.

  • Slow introduction

Wear it indoors first, with treats, for a few days.

For cats, too

Soft on the neck, safe by design.
